Wonder is a continuation of the aesthetics and emotions I explored in Yonder. It was created for the Bright Moments Finale exhibition in Venice, Italy during the 2024 Biennale. In contrast to Yonder, Wonder is fully on chain as part of a combined script with contributions from 60 artists in total.

Wonder borrows the texture and colorways from my Bright Moment series Inprecision, but juxtaposes the strong, often brutal, geometries of that series with serene, calm, organic shapes reminiscent of a dreamy landscape. Ever since creating the Yonder series I had wanted to put something like it on-chain, but I also recognised that it was not truly long-form at it’s core. It’s emotional breath is simply too narrow. The Finale exhibition provided the perfect vessel for this endavour. While the aesthetics are borrowed, the code and approaches used in Wonder are completely new. In order to speed up rendering and decrease code size Wonder doesn’t use classic collision detection techniques such as quadtrees for its flow lines. Instead It draws the lines to an invisible buffer frame and inspects this to figure out if a new line gets too close to excisting flow lines.

I also decided to provide some stronger contrast elements to the series in the form of black, gritty accent shapes that highlighted either the perceived perspective of the piece, or it’s landscape nature. The mix of the gritty top layer with a smoother watercolor-esque bottom layer is something I*ve explored extensively in my latest work, such as Becoming and Metaverse.
