Winds
Winds came out in a time before flow fields had become synonymous with generative art, thanks to the success of Fidenza. I started working on the series after having concluded Genuary2021, having found inspiration for it in one of the prompts.
Use of flow fields like this was in no way novel — Tyler Hobbs had experimented with it for many years prior to Fidenza — but I found joy in the idea of letting multiple interfering flow fields intertwine and cut into each other, or be broken up by larger structures.
Winds was my first series to be developed for digital sale as NFTs on the now defunct Hic et Nunc market. I had experimented a bit with it using some of the outputs I created during Genuary and enjoyed it so much that I was ready to jump in fullheartedly. The way I approached it was by creating two versions of each piece — one for print, and one for NFT — that were clearly alike but not identical.
Another “first” with winds was that I was determined to make 2021 a year of texture. I had already revolted against the opaque and even coloured background that my early work had sported. Now was the time to get away from smooth gradients as well. These first babysteps were — well — babysteps, and surmounted to adding some noisy colour fluctuations at the pixel level, but the game was on!
