Phases picked up where Genesis left off, and can be seen more as an evolution than a departure. Central to the series is the idea that two substances are mixing with each other in an organic swirl.

While the flow is the same as the one I played with in Genesis, the background and foreground (to the extent that distinction exist) are now equal in their ability to “flow”. In Genesis there was a clear part doing the swirling and a clear backdrop, but this is no longer the case as the colours are now flowing in both directions at equal capacity.

This can seem like a small change, but it was quite finicky to get to work and I do feel it imbues a subtle but distinct quality to the few pieces from this series.

In retrospect I think I might already at this point have rebelled against the idea of the background as a passive passenger in the algorithm. It would take many iterations and shifts before I finally shed the idea of the background just being a colour to paint upon, but this might have been my first small step.
