Genesis
Genesis was in many ways my reignition. After having become bored with the particle based systems I started out with, as well as the monochromatic aesthetics of my earliest pieces, I had taken a break from making generative art. During this time I became interested in the concept of curl noise and by extension became annoyed that there were no good way to work with noise in R. Being the person I am that meant creating a package for it which led to the ambient package. And the first thing I used this package for was this image:
In fairness this was not as big a departure from my previous work as I made it out to be. It was still largely based on polygon deformation, but instead of letting the vertices of the polygon be driven by particle interactions, they were now being pushed around by and underlying curl based flow. What made it feel more significant, I think, was that there were now colors.
I must admit, I fell completely in love with my particular breed of curl noise — I couldn’t get enough. I think it to some extent released a build up creative resservoir after my break, and in a short amount of time I had created a large series of pieces exploring various aspects of the technique. Further, most of my subsequent series continued to use curl noise in various ways.
I now know that it is hardly a revolutionary technique. Still, I continue to believe that I managed to create a unique take on it. In any way, in my little world both me and my followers found it fresh and exciting and it certainly help propel me into a modicum of recognition and got my print business started.
I owe a lot to this series. I have since moved on from this aesthetic, but I paid it my rerspect with my first ArtBlocks release. Rapture is in many ways the finale to the journey that Genesis started.
